This marks the first time Mr Porter and IWC Schaffhausen have developed an exclusive timepiece together.
Many may know Mr Porter for its impeccable selection of menswear and as a beacon for savvy male shoppers who have, for so long, seeked shopping experiences that went above and beyond clicking ‘Add to Cart’.
The e-commerce giant has changed the menswear scene over the last 10 years, but beyond the latest ready-to-wear and trendiest sneakers, it’s evolved to also become a purveyor for fine watches. So confident of its ability to reach out to its younger, savvier audience, that IWC made a decision to partner with the e-tailer to carry its high-end timepieces in 2016 — the first time that the watchmaker has ever done so.
To celebrate this longstanding relationship and more importantly, a decade of being in the business, Mr Porter has teamed up with the watchmaker for the 110-piece limited edition 10 Years of Mr Porter Limited Edition Pilot Automatic Chronograph, and it’s like no other in IWC’s range.
This might be the first collaboration between the two but the chemistry is unmistakable. The Pilot’s Watch is one of IWC’s most important models and a well-loved tool amongst aviators, but it takes on a more sophisticated twist here with a bronze case.
The alloy used is a mix of aluminium and zinc, alongside the necessary copper and tin, so expect much better surface hardness and scratch-resistance. As with all bronze watches, you can look forward to it ageing gracefully with you over time to develop a beautiful one-of-a-kind patina.
The retro-chic aesthetic continues onto the dial, where the numbers, markers, and hands are also rendered a subtle bronze. Add to that the latter’s standout white SuperLuminova, and a deep, black dial, and you’ve got yourself one the most sartorial takes on the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph ever made.
As a little Easter egg and a reminder of what this watch is all about, the white SuperLuminova also extends to the number “10”, which glows to mark this special anniversary.
At the back, a solid caseback made of titanium has hypoallergenic properties to suit even the most sensitive of skin, with a muted sleekness that provides the perfect backdrop for the numbered limited-edition engraving. The IWC Calibre 69380 column-wheel chronograph movement within beats at a healthy 28,800 vph, and has a 46-hour power reserve.
Because this is a Mr Porter special, the strap is just as important as the watch itself. The 10 Years of Mr Porter Limited Edition Pilot Automatic Chronograph will be the first IWC watch ever to be offered with an Alcantara suede strap, a brilliant pairing with the bronze case as both have a softness and matte-ness that imparts a warmth without ever being flashy, so you’ll get plenty of mileage with it.
