The tie-dye trend has been around a while (thank you scumbros), so you’d be forgiven to think the style was waning, especially after it seemed like everyone on the planet bought a tie-dye tracksuit during quarantine. But tie-dye isn’t going anywhere and Rihanna’s latest fit proves it.
While on her way to dinner last night, the singer wore a spectacular ’70s-inspired tie-dye coat (we told you it was the decade of the summer), paired with chlorophyll green tie-dye trousers. She contrasted her double-dyed outfit with all-white accessories that channeled the early 2000s, including an oversized belt buckle and a cutout top featuring something that looks suspiciously like a belly chain.
This isn’t the first time that RiRi has shown her love for the print. Earlier this year the singer gave everyone summer envy when she posted a pic of her wearing a matching summer dress and bucket hat, while last month she wore a zebra print hat with a different tie-dye coat because of course Rihanna has two tie-dye coats.
But it’s not just Rihanna keeping the trend alive. Other celebrities have majorly leaned into the tie-dye trend recently. Kendall Jenner is photographed almost every day wearing some iteration of the print, while Bella Hadid actually released her own line of tie-dye T-shirts with Chrome Hearts late last year.
On the brand side of things, labels who have always dabbled in tie-dye are still using the print — think Aries, Online Ceramics, Collina Strada and The Elder Statesmen (whose sweatshirt ASAP Rocky memorably wore in summer 2019 proving that the print didn’t have to look sloppy), and of course, Dior who has steadily been incorporating tie-dye in collections since Spring 2019. While we’ve had tie-dye pieces from unexpected brands including Margiela, Prada, Saint Laurent, and even Arc’teryx.
According to Google Trends, interest in tie-dye peaked around August 2020, and while it’s still too early to tell if people’s searches will hit their first summer quarantine high, as we ease into the summer months the term is steadily creeping upwards. This likely means this will be another summer of tie-dye — so get ready.
