What We’re Saying: New Balance’s 2002R push goes beyond that of mere collaborations. Sure, we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of Salehe Bembury’s “Water Be The Guide” just like everyone else, but the brand has a few key in-line colorways dropping soon as well.

Courtesy of authorized New Balance retailer Asphaltgold, today we’re getting our first look at the “Protection” Pack of the 2002R. These iterations are so distinctive that you’d think they were the result of a high profile collab. New Balance’s in-house team came through with something special for this particular release, though, essentially deconstructing the 2010 runner.

The “Protection” Pack consists of three 2002R colorways, each boasting a deconstructed aesthetic. The upper is comprised of layers of furry suede to give the shoe an “untamed look,” as Asphaltgold puts it. Underneath the exterior panels of suede, which extend beyond their natural point, is mesh construction. Unfinished edges and exposed foam tongues further enhance the deconstructed theme, while the silhouette’s customary tooling resides below in the form of an ABZORB midsole and N-ergy outsole.

Each colorway from the “Protection” Pack — “Sea Salt,” “Rain Cloud,” and “Phantom” — is due to release soon through retailers like Asphaltgold.
