There might be plenty of women’s watches in the market but not many can boast being specifically created for women.
Watches for the fairer sex have — for decades — been launched as an after-thought of the men’s, and are simply often downsized, iced-out, and then rendered in candied hues of pinks and baby blues. To break this stereotype, Zenith has pulled out all the stops, creating what is not only its first women’s line in 15 years, but also the first ever women’s watch that was designed — from the ground up — to be a ladies’ collection.
Christened the Defy Midnight collection, the series will see a trio of gradient dials (gradient grey, gradient blue, or gradient mother-of-pearl), each portraying by a night sky courtesy of lume-filled stars. The diamond markers do plenty to help the glitzy cause too, as do the 44 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel should you wish for something a little more dressy. Otherwise, the flat steel bezel makes for a more understated timepiece for everyday use.
As its name suggests, the collection will take its cues from the Defy collection, one of Zenith’s biggest successes. The 36mm timepiece isn’t a smaller rip-off from the 41mm men’s versions though; its design is distinctly more feminine, with a closed case to give the watch a cleaner aesthetic. A date window at three o’clock adds functionality to this timepiece, as do the Super-Luminova coated hands.
But it’s what’s under a dial that truly counts, and this is where Zenith really makes its case here. Instead of plonking the usual quartz movement (a women’s watch favourite) within and calling it a day, it’s chosen an in-house movement instead. The Elite 670 SK is also used in the men’s 41mm Defy Classic models in ceramic and titanium, and is a suitable candidate seeing as its only 3.88mm thick. It also has a silicon escape wheel and lever, as well as a 48-hour power reserve.
All Zenith Defy Midnight watches will come with three additional coloured satin and leather straps to swap between the stainless steel bracelet it comes in, and can be interchanged easily without the need for manicure-ruining tools. Now this is a watch that’s made only for the ladies.
