On January 19, Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter over the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died after being shot by a gun held by Baldwin on the film’s set. On January 20, Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria, wore a sweater asking for “Empathy.” No, thanks.
Since Hutchins was shot on Oct. 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin has taken a series of steps to distance himself from the tragedy, steps that only the rich and powerful can afford to take.
Baldwin did a headline-grabbing interview to address Hutchins’ death (and perhaps drum up some sympathy), sued other Rust crewmembers to shift the blame, and attempted to pre-emptively defend himself liability filings — basically everything but take any kind of responsibility.
It’s tough to sympathize. The wealthy A-lister at the heart of an otherwise innocent, hardworking woman’s death is seeking to shift focus away from himself instead of facing the disaster head-on. Doesn’t feel right.
So, when Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria, steps out with clothes that attempt to reframe or soften the conversation — she wore a “Human” hoodie the day before the “empathy” sweater — it’s hard to swallow.
And don’t even get us started on the $300 slippers.
Celebrities aren’t “above the law,” Santa Fe district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said. “Everyone deserves justice.”
Indeed.
Hilaria Baldwin has a lot of arbitrary hate levied at her and Alec for whatever reason across the internet. Who cares. Her cultural appropriation and ever-expanding brood are separate subjects.
This isn’t about adding to the pile, but emphasizing that Alec Baldwin is at least partially culpable for Hutchins’ death and is no less deserving of scrutiny than anyone else facing legal repercussions for harming another person.
Empathy? Please. This is the guy who won an award for the world’s most irritating Trump impression.
How about some empathy for Hutchins’ family?
