Dark Horse: The Academy Will Not Disqualify “Surprise” Oscar Nominee Andrea Riseborough

The show will go on.

Andrea Riseborough will still compete in the Oscars “Best Actress in a Leading Role” category for her performance in To Leslie.

This comes after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reviewed an aggressive awards campaign on behalf of Riseborough.

After which it announced that it will not revoke her nomination for the “little-seen film.”

The underwhelming reception of To Leslie surprised Oscars stakeholders who did not expect Riseborough to secure a nod.

The “surprise” nomination led to speculation whether the Oscars campaign for Riseborough had violated the Academy’s lobbying rules.

I’ve seen enough: Andrea Riseborough deserves her Best Actress nomination to be rescinded.

Some of her supporters violated Academy rules by publicly pushing a misinformation campaign on actresses of color (Michelle Yeoh & Viola Davis) to lobby members to back her.

“[The Academy] has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded,” chief executive officer Bill Kramer said.
