For many of us, reading has become a forgotten hobby. After all, it’s much easier to scroll through social media than to sit down and focus on one book at a time.
If you’re looking to rekindle your interest in reading, here are books published in 2022 that were recommended by cultural tastemakers.

The Pachinko Parlour by Elisa Shua Dusapin
In her new book, the author of Winter in Sokcho continues to explore themes of identity, culture, otherness, and unlikely friendships.
“It’s a story which captures being alien in a place that should feel like home. It’s visceral, struggling with one’s own identity. There’s a lightness and a coldness and a disconnect, which is inviting,” says fashion designer Simone Rocha.
What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma by Stephanie Foo
Journalist Stephanie Foo bravely sets out on a journey of understanding and healing. Diagnosed with complex PTSD, Foo seeks out various psychologists and innovative therapies.
Upon returning to her hometown, she also uncovers family secrets and learns about the extent of generational trauma.
Jennette McCurdy, actor turned author, says “Stephanie Foo’s voice is singular — at times poetic, at times biting. A must-read for anyone healing from complex trauma.”
McCurdy’s own memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, is also a highly acclaimed read.
When I Sing, Mountains Dance by Irene Solà
Writer Xochitl Gonzalez describes this work as having “Beauty and heartbreak and an attention to the things that surround us that so often are forgotten that it dares you to walk around and notice them yourself.”
The entire story, set in a Catalan mountain valley, is told in a multitude of perspectives. From clouds and lightning bolts to animals and people (even ghosts), Solà works her magic to animate the world around us.
Ghost Lover by Lisa Taddeo
“She ruthlessly explores jealousy, relationships between women, aging, revenge and, of course, desire. Taddeo never lets you come up for air — making you laugh while simultaneously horrifying you all when you least expect it,” says model Emily Ratajkowski.
The book features nine short stories that revolve around the fictional dating service Ghost Lover and the flawed women that become entangled with it.
