Gavel&Block, a subsidiary of the Philippines’ premier auction house Salcedo Auctions, held its ‘art+design’ online auction on February 4, 2023. The subsidiary “was created primarily to serve the needs of next-gen collectors.”
Results from the online sale show that next-gen collectors vary in taste but share the same appreciation for the finer things and nostalgic pieces. Participating bidders also showed interest in lesser-known artists and both local and international brands.

Some auction favorites include Cesar Buenaventura, as more than half of his collection was sold. His untitled bayanihan-themed masterpiece exceeded the estimated cost by over 200%. Pop art proved its popularity with plenty of bidders taking interest in the illustrations of editorial cartoonist Larry Alcala, award-winning illustrator and abstract painter Mauro Malang Santos, as well as world-renowned artist Manuel Baldemor.
Works depicting our national heroes also fetched a generous price. These pieces include J. Caldere’s photo engraving of Andres Bonifacio’s cry for independence and Anastacio Caedo’s bronze bust of Jose Rizal.
Decorative plates have garnered a strong following, following an emerging trend. Mother and child-themed pieces by Ang Kiukok, BenCab, Araceli Dans and Jose Blanco went for over 400% their estimated price.
