Introducing 4 New & Cool Editions of the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic

Released last year, the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic made quite some noise at the time of its presentation… Surfing the trend for sporty-chic watches with integrated bracelets and a cool 1970s/1980s vibe, it was probably one of the most accessible options in this crowded market. We reviewed it, and we liked it. Sure, its very accessible price means some concessions have been made, but it looks and feels good. And now, it even looks cooler with the introduction of four new editions that will certainly increase the hype surrounding these sporty-chic watches by Citizen

Excellent value for the money and cool designs. This is something we can say for most of the watches produced by Citizen. We can’t really argue with the cool factor of a Promaster dive watch, a watch that offers all you need (and then some) at an ultra-competitive price. And what about a Promaster Marine Automatic Diver in Super-Titanium for less than 400 euros? Again, you won’t need more than that for a holiday watch. Citizen has long been involved in the field of accessible dive and sports watches. But with the launch of the Tsuyosa Automatic, the Japanese brand entered the market for sporty-chic watches with integrated bracelets. And it did it with the same recipe: accessible, well-designed, and well-equipped watches. At first, the Tsuyosa was released in four editions – dark blue, black, green and a rather attractive bright yellow dial (and a silvery-white model joined soon after). Appealing, yet rather classic. Now Citizen spices up the recipe with these four new editions.

Let’s get straight to the point. Citizen is using the trendiest styles around to introduce a new layer of cool to the Tsuyosa collection. Sure, these colours are a bit déjà-vu and don’t revolutionise the concept. We’ve seen them in other segments of the watchmaking industry, and Citizen plays on the safe side. But that doesn’t mean that the result isn’t appealing… In fact, I’d say that these four new models – maybe not the gold-plated model, but that’s more of a personal opinion – are genuinely desirable.

For 2023, we have four new editions of the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic: three models in steel, one gold-plated model and four new dials, each with its own style. First, the reference NJ0151-88L comes with a steel case and features a dark blue gradient dial with a sandblasted finish resulting in a grained texture. It also comes with beige-toned luminous inserts on the hands and markers. Next is the reference NJ0151-88M, again in steel, and this time with the trendiest colour possible, light Tiffany blue over a sunray-brushed texture.

The last of the three steel versions is the reference NJ0151-88X and comes with a sunray-brushed dial with a pronounced gradient effect and a teal/dark turquoise colour. Last is the reference NJ0153-82X, housed in a rose gold-plated steel case with a dark red sunray-brushed dial with a gradient effect.

For the rest, nothing has changed. The basics of the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic are still there. It means a barrel-shaped 40mm steel case with multiple facets and polished accents, a circular bezel, a crown slightly recessed and positioned at 4 o’clock, a sapphire crystal with a date magnifier and a water-resistance of 50 metres. The new dials retain the same design as before, with oversized applied markers, baton hands, and minimal literature. Powered by the in-house calibre 8210, an entry-level automatic movement visible under a see-through caseback, the Tsuyosa comes on a 3-link bracelet with polished and brushed surfaces and a slightly 1980s vibe with its rounded links.

The four new editions of the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic are already available in selected markets (for example, UAE, some parts of Asia and HK…) and should arrive to European markets too. Prices for the steel models will be identical to the previous editions – EUR 299 – and the new gold-plated edition will retail for EUR 349. For more details, please visit Citizen’s global website.
