Introducing The Redesigned Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day-Date 41mm

The Pontos has to be seen as the traditional, casually elegant proportion of ML. Not too formal, yet discreet and sleek, it is offered in an array of editions with different automatic movements. Not long ago, Maurice Lacroix unveiled slightly redesigned editions of its classic chronograph, the Pontos, with new and rather handsome colour schemes. Now, it’s time for the Pontos Day-Date 41mm to undergo a slight facelift, with a redesigned 2023 collection. It’s all about small touches, but these new Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day-Date models are surely more appealing still.

The Pontos is a long-lasting collection at Maurice Lacroix, which has evolved gradually over the years, to remain up to date. Redesigned quite drastically in 2017, the Day-Date model remains one of the bestsellers in the brand’s collection. In 2020, ML offered a slight update, which we covered in this article. And now, Maurice Lacroix releases 3 new dials that add depth and legibility to this classic watch.

What remains true is the case. Still measuring 41mm in diameter for a slender 11mm height, the steel case is characterized by two main elements. First, a minor extension to the right side partially shrouds the crown like a guard, and if it’s not there to further protect the watch, its assymetry surely breaks the otherwise too-classic round shape of the case. Second, the lugs are, like all models in the collection, featuring a double-step design with a satin finish on the top and polished outer (second) level. The circular bezel is slightly angled and frames a domed sapphire crystal. Despite its elegant vocation, the Pontos Day-Date 41mm is water-resistant to 100m.

What changes then…? It’s all about details on the dial, but welcome ones. By judiciously juxtaposing different hues, textures, lines and curves, Maurice Lacroix has produced a dial that has more depth, more details, more interest altogether and increased legibility. Previously entirely silver-coloured, with tone-on-tone tracks and gold-plated hands and markers, ML now brings 3 different dial colours with contrasted accents. The minute track, which isn’t positioned on the edge of the dial but inside the hour track, is now differently coloured from the rest of the dial. In the same vein, the faceted markers and hands increase contrast at different angles.

The Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day-Date 41mm is now available in silver, with a grey minute track and 4N gold-plated hands and markers (an evolution of the existing model), but also in new editions, such as an anthracite version with 4N gold minute track and hands/markers, and a black dial with silver-coloured track and hands/markers. As indicated by its name, the watch features indications for the date and the day of the week, positioned in nicely designed trapezoidal elements. All dials are sunray-brushed for a lively effect.

Inside the case and visible under the exhibition caseback is the calibre ML143, a Sellita-sourced movement with 4Hz frequency and 38h power reserve. Each version of the Pontos Day-Date can be chosen either on a faux-alligator leather strap in black, with an M logo matching the dial’s hardware or a 3-link steel bracelet. Both are closed by a folding clasp and feature the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange System – a user-friendly way of swapping the strap.
